The Epsom Sand Filtration System (SFS) utilises only the highest quality components and fittings available, so you can be confident that your investment is sound and long lasting. It is environmentally friendly, efficient to maintain, and Australian owned and designed.
And not only is it an excellent domestic wastewater treatment system, it is also ideal for commercial developments such as caravan parks, motels, shopping centres and schools.
The Epsom SFS is ideal for larger households, entertainers or frequent travellers because it has 5 partitions, allowing for better filtration. Also, its large 7500 litre tank allows for greater retention time, hence greater efficiency (most competitors provide 2 or 3 partitions and only a 3900 litre tank).
The Epsom SFSworks on the principles of primary settling plus secondary treatment. The treatment process is then followed by disposing of the treated wastewater through the irrigation disposal method.
Benefits of the Epsom SFS include:
The system can process the wastewater from up to 20 persons.
The system requires to be serviced only ONCE-A-YEAR (most other system types require quarterly or tri-annual servicing).
UV Disinfection option is available.
Because of its large 7500 litre tank, the system has a high tolerance during periods of both peak loading (parties, holidays) and dormancy (empty house, intermittent use).
The system is very economical to run and has low maintenance requirements.
The quality of the treated wastewater is excellent.
Individually designed systems to suit all specific needs, with low visual impact.
The Epsom SFS process
Primary Settling
All of the wastewater from your house flows first into the septic zone, where solids are settled out and the micro-organisms carry out the initial part of the purification process.
Once the organic impurities have been absorbed within the anaerobic culture of micro-organisms, the water then passes to the secondary sedimentation zone.
The Percolation Process
The partially purified water is then pumped at a constant regulated flow over to the sandbed for intense filtration. This is achieved through 6 layers of coarse sand, aggregate, geomac filter fabric, and a filter sock. When the water has completed the percolation process through the sandbed, it is then gravity-fed to the final pump-out chamber inside the tank.
Pump-out
Once the treated water reaches a certain level in the final chamber, the submersible pump will automatically start and pump the water to the designated irrigation disposal area.

Wastewater Disposal Areas There are various ways of disposing of the treated wastewater, which will be decided between your local Council and (in most instances) your Geotechnical Engineer. The simplest way is by above-ground heavy droplet spray, but other methods are shallow subsurface irrigation, evapotranspiration beds and pressure-compensating drip systems. Once the method of disposal has been decided, we will provide you with a firm quotation.
Site Inspections Site inspections to your block are easy - just call us.
Excavation We can provide the excavation service for your treatment plant and/or water tank. This service also includes the required bedding sand and water. Of course if you wish to provide the excavation yourself, that's OK. We will provide you with a drawing showing the dimensions of the hole to be excavated, the amount of bedding sand required and instructions for filling with water.
Delivery & Placement Unless otherwise requested, all our quotations include the freight to cart the treatment plant tank/water tank to your site, and the crane hire to unload the tank and place it into the prepared excavation (yours or ours).
Treatment System Owner's Guide As part of our commitment to excellent customer service, we have produced an Owner's Guide for your treatment system. The guide is informative, easy to read and is provided to assist your understanding of your treatment plant.
And very importantly . . .
Our Hand-Over This is a service provided exclusively by Smart Sewage Solutions. After your treatment system has been commissioned for use and you have (or are just about to) move into your new home, we will arrange to meet you onsite. Here, we will introduce you fully to the treatment system, explain its correct operation, provide you with an informative Owner's Guide, and answer any queries you might have.
